The Portrait
The story I heard about this portrait of Elise is that Bolossy was browsing an art gallery and saw this painting. He had been away, and hadn't heard that Elise had sat for a portrait. Suspecting an illicit liaison, he asked for the address of the artist. He went to the studio incognito to meet the artist and ask about the portrait. The artist said that he had never even met the "subject," - he had seen the photograph in a photography store and found it so "atmospheric" and "pensive" that he bought the photo and painted the portrait from that. He had added the letter to add to the thoughtful atmosphere. Bolossy bought the painting.
This hand-to-the-cheek pose was apparently quite popular.
After the divorce, Elise cut Bolossy out of the old family pictures.

This picture is of Elise with
family at her mother's home in Yonkers. On the porch are Christina
Brunke Waldau and her brother Henry Brunke (with his dog Porthos). Judging
by children's ages, it was taken in early 1890's. (Christina B.
Waldau died in 1894.)

In about 1900 or 1901, Elise married William Lowitz. This is the only picture I have of him. This picture is from 1918, with baby Grace (Edith's first daughter), Elise, unknown pal in hat, and Willie Lowitz.
